Learning Interpretation Through Art

Art gives meaning to our lives and helps us understand & interpret our world. It is an essential part of our culture because it allows us to have a deeper understanding of our existence and feelings. It increases our self-awareness, allows us to be open to new ideas and experiences and interpret the world in a better way. Interpretation aims to advance understanding by providing explanations of various kinds. Today we are going to discuss how art aims to maximize our understanding and appreciation of a work, and enable us to understand it better.

The interpretation of art can be also called aesthetic interpretation. Regardless of the term used, this is the process of trying to explain and explore the meaning behind a work of art. Looking at an artwork, be it a painting, sculpture or installation, includes considerations about not just what is apparently visible on the surface (what can be seen or heard in the artwork) but also about how the artwork was completed, mediums being used and in what context. It also implies looking beyond the visual and understanding the journey of the artist, economical and socio political aspects of the time it was created and emotional/psychological state of the artist as well. However, this does not mean that there is always only one correct interpretation of a given piece of art. There can be multiple interpretations of an artwork and it can also be subjective. This opens up more discussion in an art classroom where artworks are discussed and learnt. Children start to analyze from their individual perspectives and they come up with their own viewpoints. It is very important for a child to develop the practice of looking and interpreting what they observe which they can sharpen with the help of art lessons. The ability to critically analyze and interpret is important in all academic fields such as debate competitions in schools, writing essays, composing their own stories and paintings. DEX-Art programs have classes for all age groups where they explore a diverse range of mediums and come across artworks that have been created in the past as well as contemporary manual & digital forms of art. They learn how different countries and communities have their significant individual styles and characteristics of creating art. They also understand the medium of the work and the reason for choosing that particular medium. Each medium has its own technique or application and the way of using it develops the power to interpret what is the reason behind using that technique or color.

Interpretation of art and its components help children to build strong reasoning abilities. This impacts positive brain function and prepares them for all aspects in life. They grow their critical thinking ability as interpretation also means analyzing, questioning, creating reasons and broadening their existing perspectives. Hence art lessons are a significant tool to learn how to develop interpretation skills in a child.
