Use of Visual Art by Interior Designers

Interior design can be explained as the art and science of enhancing the interior of a structural space or building to achieve a healthier and more aesthetically pleasing environment for the people using the space. It is the application of human creative skill and imagination in visual forms of varied colors, textures, and elements, curating spaces to be appreciated primarily for their beauty and emotional perseverance.

Drawing has a crucial role in interior design. The designer has to plan, research, coordinate and manage projects. It has a lot of stages that include the development of the conceptual idea, space planning, an inspection of sites, programming, communicating, and executing the idea of design. Before the design can be carried out interior designers need to make initial sketches of their plan and make the necessary changes based on clients' requirements before finalizing the plan using a CAD(Computer-aided design). Sketches are an important part of the design and development process. Sketches help to convey ideas, demonstrate functionality, visualize the final space, and illustrate the overall floor plan and perspective. It assists in discovering potential issues and their solutions. Not only that, sketching pushes you to extract numerous ideas out quickly before you enter the digital world. Another powerful tool in interior design is color. Designers often drew their inspirations by looking at paintings. Artworks enable us to hone our visual understanding of color balance, compositional principles, and aesthetical significance. Practical experiences in creating artworks, and knowledge of color theories help a designer compose and coordinate colors together to create a stylish scheme on the interior of the structural space. Each color has its definition and it can play an important role in conveying information nonverbally, evoking certain emotions, and even influencing the modes of thinking. Colors are decided according to the space being created such as residential design, commercial design, hospitality design, healthcare design, universal design, or exhibition design. An interior designer needs to acquire deep knowledge and experience with colors, and understand the psychology and meaning of each color in different locations and situations to create suitable combinations for each given space. A proper combination of colors eventually impacts the state of mind of the observer. Colors make the room feel either more calm, cheerful, comfortable, stressful, or dramatic. Color combinations can make a tiny room seem larger or smaller. So professionals in the field have to make their best decision to choose appropriate colors for a place towards achieving how the clients will like to look and feel, in that space.

It can be concluded rightly that drawing and sketching are the backbones of interior design. There is no great design that didn’t originate from a sketch on a piece of paper. Art ensures that designers are properly able to communicate their ideas through their work and effectively fine-tune with the stakeholders of a project to create a space with the vision of the client.
