Wet on wet

My wet-in-wet watercolor landscape. Done on chitrapat paper. What do you think about it😊 : r/Watercolor

Wet on wet painting is a painting method where layers of wet paint are applied on top of layers of wet paint that have already been applied. The technique, which is primarily used in oil painting, necessitates a rapid pace of work because the first layers must be completed before they dry. A new layer of oil-based paint is typically placed to the majority of a painting only after the preceding layer has had time to fully cure; depending on the paint's thickness, this drying process might take several days to several weeks. On the other hand, work done with alla prima can be completed in a single "sitting" or session, depending on the types of paint employed and their corresponding drying durations. Wet-on-wet painting with watercolors necessitates a certain level of skill in accepting uncertainty. Watercolor paint, which is extremely translucent and prone to mishaps, will bloom in unexpected ways that can be either a blessing or a hardship, depending on the artist's mood.

Diego VelázquezThe Jester Calabacillas (Madrid) (1637-39) is a prime example of the wet-on-wet technique.

The Jester Calabacillas is a picture by Velázquez depicting Don Juan María Martín, also known as "Juan de Calabazas" or "El Búfón Calabacillas." He worked as a jester at Philip IV of Spain's court, earning a respectable salary and occasionally going by the moniker Bizco (cross-eyed). The Prado Museum is where it is now kept. In addition to demonstrating Velazquez's equal display of dignity toward everyone, monarch or jester, he depicted him with respect.

The jester is also the subject of a picture in the United States called The Jester Calabacillas (Cleveland), which is currently housed in the Museo del Prado.

History

Since the invention of oil painting, wet-on-wet painting has been used in conjunction with other techniques. Several prominent Early Netherlandish painters, like Rogier van der Weyden and Jan van Eyck in the Arnolfini portrait, employed wet-on-wet painting in some of their works. Commercially made paints in tiny, collapsible tubes have been utilized since the middle of the 19th century, making a wide range of colors readily available for quick, on-the-spot painting. This technique has been used in various ways by Impressionists like Claude Monet, post-Impressionists like Vincent van Gogh, realists like John Singer Sargent, Robert Henri, and George Bellows, Expressionists like Chaïm Soutine and Yitzhak Frenkel, and Abstract Expressionist Willem de Kooning. It is still widely used by fine artists, both figurative and non-figurative. After discovering the technique from his instructor William "Bill" Alexander, artist Bob Ross used it on his show The Joy of Painting to create entire pieces in real-time inside a single episode.

Frans HalsJasper Schade van Westrum (1645); painted mostly wet-on-wet. The forehead has portions of wet (white) over dry (brown/black).

The Dutch delegate to the States-General, Jasper Schade (1623–1692), is most recognized today for his picture by Frans Hals.
Zandbergen at Huis ter Heide, Utrecht He was also well-known for his building on the Amersfoortseweg, which was constructed by Jacob van Campen .Although Hals' image of him sat there for generations, by 1890 it was owned by the National Gallery in Prague. The flowing brushstrokes employed to capture the gold brocade on his jacket make this portrait excellent. Studies have shown that it was painted wet-in-wet, or alla prima. This portrait, which is barely 31.5 by 26.6 inches in size, could have been finished while Schade was visiting Haarlem for the day and brought it with him, still damp.

Schade planted the trees that would eventually grow into a sizable forest on the road where his house was constructed. He subsequently held the positions of representative to the States-General of the Netherlands from Utrecht and deacon of the chapter of Oud-Munster in Utrecht. Nine years later, in 1654, Cornelis Jonson van Ceulen, a Dutch painter who had recently returned from London, painted his wedding portrait and that of his wife, Cornelia Strick van Linschoten.

Imaginative portrait by Cornelis Cort, 1572

The majority of Rogier van der Weyden's surviving works are religious triptychs, altarpieces, and commissioned single and diptych portraits. He was an early Netherlandish painter who lived from 1399 or 1400 to June 18, 1464. He was originally known as Roger de la Pasture. During his career, he enjoyed great success; his paintings were transported to Spain and Italy, and he was commissioned by a number of people, including Philip the Good, Dutch aristocracy, and foreign nobles. His popularity had surpassed that of Jan van Eyck by the later part of the fifteenth century. But his fame only lasted until the 17th century, and by the middle of the 18th century, he was all but forgotten, mostly because of shifting tastes. Over the next 200 years, his reputation gradually recovered. Today, he is regarded as the most significant Northern painter of the 15th century and, along with Robert Campin and van Eyck, the third (by birthdate) of the three great Early Netherlandish artists (Vlaamse Primitieven or "Flemish Primitives"). There are very few known facts about van der Weyden's life. The scant information we are aware of is derived from disjointed public records. However, the attribution of paintings that are currently attributed to him is generally acknowledged, based mostly on the stylistic evidence of several paintings by a creative master but also on circumstantial evidence.

In industry

Wet-on-wet applications are widely used in the automotive sector. Although there are a few products that permit the use of wet-on-wet applications in house painting, this technique is not commonly used.
